New Jersey’s newest Senator-elect, Democratic Congressman Andy Kim, joined WRSU’s News team for a one-on-one interview as part of our live, wall-to-wall coverage on Election Night 2024. Kim defeated Republican Curtis Bashaw in one of the more intriguing races in New Jersey politics in recent years, replacing disgraced Senator Bob Menendez, and initially running against First Lady Tammy Murphy, who had the backing of many state Democrats.
Kim will be the first Asian-American to represent New Jersey in the U.S. Senate, and the first senator from any state of Korean descent to serve. Hailing from Moorestown, he’s the state’s first Senator from South Jersey since 1955.
During the interview, Kim said he has a special affinity for those in college. “So often, Gen Z doesn’t feel like their voices are being heard,” Kim told News Director Priscilla Senger and reporters Vishva Oralie and Zach Ashare.
“I would say, your voice and tour concerns are as important as anyone else’s,” Kim said. “A lot of these challenges that college students are facing right now are ones that reverberate widely. I’m looking forward to being able to engage and hopefully be able to step up and represent everyone in this state.”
