In what was a back and forth affair, Rutgers Men’s Lacrosse (8-3, 1-1) was battle tested in more ways than one throughout the full 60 minutes, and then some against the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (6-3, 1-1).
After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Scarlet Knights saw the Blue Jays storm back, and eventually Johns Hopkins held a 2 goal advantage at halftime.
After being down by 2 goals on separate occasions in the 2nd half, when down 8-6, Rutgers fired back in dramatic fashion. Collin Zeller brought it within 1 with 4:36 remaining, and Kasey Mongillo put the ball in the back of the net with the clock reading just 0.1 seconds in Period 4.
Tied 8-8, the first overtime was a back and forth effort, but needed more than just 4 extra minutes. With 2:38 to go in 2OT, Haydn Sommer buried a putback, off a rebound on a shot from Colin Kelly.
It was an outstanding duel between Goalkeepers all game long. Cardin Stoller recorded 9 saves on 17 SOG. Oren Gelinas stood on his head to make 19 saves for the Blue Jays on 28 total SOG from Rutgers.
Assistant Sports Director Will Carmenaty and General Manager-Elect Anthony Palumbo spoke with Head Coach Brian Brecht following the Double OT thriller:
