Amazon Web Services Outage affects Rutgers Canvas, other services

Rutgers Canvas is the latest victim in the Amazon Web Services outage Monday.

Students trying to log into Canvas are met with an error screen, reading “Canvas is experiencing issues due to an ongoing AWS incident”. A further line reads “we are working on recovering as soon as possible”.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, Canvas, Kaltura and Respondus Monitor all remained off-line or are limited. Users can check the status of Canvas on Instructure’s website.

Some classes cancelled lockdown exams, others had to adapt to different ways of teaching without Canvas.

Many other sites, such as Zoom, Reddit, and Snapchat are unavailable following the outages. Even banking and financial apps were not spared, as Venmo and Chime also faced uncertain availability.

Down detector, which tracks internet disruptions, said it received 6.5 million reports from users world wide of sites being out.

On Monday night, service came back, and Rutgers Canvas was back up.
