The Rutgers Black Student Union hosted a community service event Tuesday night, where students came together to create cards for children at RWJ University Hospital.
Participants used markers, stickers, colored pencils, and other supplies to create personalized cards designed to brighten a child’s day.
One attendee, Mo, told us that she hopes that these cards will keep the children positive on their journey. “I think these cards will help them know that there are a lot of people who do care about their journey and know how hard they’re fighting.”
Another participant, Joy, agreed with that sentiment, saying that she “wanted them to feel like someone was there for them during a difficult time.”
WRSU also spoke with event coordinators Brittany and Kai about why they chose this as one of their first BSU events of the school year.
Brittany stated that they were driven by the fact that some children in hospitals are not able to come back to start school or enjoy normal routines due to medical care. She wanted to “find a way to bring a little bit of that happiness to them instead.”
Kai explained that she hopes the cards will show these children that people are rooting for them on their journey.
In addition to giving back to children in the hospital, participants were able to earn community service hours while spending time with other Black students at Rutgers.
Marvelous, a BSU member, told us that he’s attended many events like this before and enjoys attending BSU community service events with people who look like him.
He further explained that he hopes to gain a sense of community by attending BSU events, help people outside his community, and learn more about people in his demographic and beyond.
For members, the event was also an opportunity to connect with others while making a difference in their community.
