Interview with Midnight Generation

After a decade of driving the electronic disco scene, Midnight Generation is trying something new. The Mexican band is the latest electronic group to experiment with different sounds, blending funk, disco, and synth-pop into an addictive sound.

Their newest single, “Runaways,” is an upbeat dance-pop anthem with bits of disco futurism. This marks an exciting new chapter in the five-man group’s storied musical journey.

This single arrived in the midst of their WORLD TOUR 2026. One of their largest tours to date, spanning multiple continents and appearances at festivals like Montreux Jazz Festival and Warm Up Festival. On top of this, the band will perform in support of musical giants like Empire of the Sun and Jamiroquai, as well as their own headlining shows.

Weeks after their Gov Ball performance, I spoke to the band about their newest single, extended time on the road, and future recording plans.

How did you approach “Runaways” in the studio? How did the approach mirror or differ from your usual recording process?

We worked on this song the way we normally do in the studio, but we wanted to write a song that spoke to what our lives would look like in the coming months. We tried to replicate that exact experience of putting our music out in front of a lot of people and living the tour life.

The outro on “Runaways” really ties the whole song together. Tell me about the outro and how you wanted the listener to feel when the song ended?

We always have a ton of moments and musical ideas in our songs. At times, we think we already have enough for a song, but then we end up with a lot of parts and feel like we need to pick and choose. Personally, though, I like structuring songs in different ways, non-traditional ways. This outro has a lot of energy, which I think the audience might not see coming.

What was the inspiration behind the portion of the “Runaways” music video when the band was selling their own vinyl and merch?

‘Runaways’ is exactly about that band that goes out on tour and starts funding their shows by selling merch and promoting their music the traditional way. That’s exactly how we got started, and we enjoy that because it’s the most real side of music; you never stop promoting yourself in the most organic way.

How did the band choreograph the music video? How does dance affect the music and the approach to creating music videos?

For this one, we wanted to make a simple, straightforward video with its own aesthetic, where people could see us exactly as we are. It’ll all make sense in the rest of the album’s videos, as everything follows a single creative through-line.

You’ve just embarked on your biggest tour yet with “World Tour 2026.” With every tour, how do you approach spending extended time on the road?

Honestly, we love being on tour. Sometimes it’s a strange feeling, because you miss your family and home, but we also know this is for the good of the music we make. Plus, we have a great time, and the tour we’ve put together with our booking agencies is fantastic.

On the topic of touring, you recently performed at Gov Ball in New York. What sets NYC crowds apart from the other cities you’ve played in?

NYC is special because they’re a very well-versed audience who have listened to just about any artist you can imagine. It’s not easy playing for a New Yorker, but we think they enjoyed it as much as we did. Gov Ball is a wonderful festival.

You’re touring with Empire of the Sun, which will land you on the biggest stages of your career. How do you adjust your performance to perform in huge spaces with potentially unacquainted crowds?

We’re used to playing different sets and different songs. When you’re doing a support show, it’s super important to leave people intrigued so that after the show, they want to go check out the opening band’s music. That’s what we’ll try to create.

What can fans expect from Midnight Generation’s next release?

Every single off the upcoming album has something special about it; we think the one that’s coming is going to be huge.
