Mikie Sherrill wins 2025 New Jersey Governor election over Jack Ciattarelli, other election results

Democratic candidate for governor and congresswoman Mikie Sherrill has won the 2025 New Jersey Governor Election over Republican Jack Ciattarelli.

Despite the last polls showing a statsitical dead heat between the two candidates before election night, Sherrill won decisively over Ciattarelli, with her win projected before 9:30 p.m.

In her victory speech, Sherrill talked about the themes of liberty and prosperity:

In his concession speech, Ciattarelli said the loss hasn’t changed him:

Given New Jersey’s off-year election along with Virginia, both gubernatorial elections are often considered referendums on the presidency at the federal level.

Sherrill wasn’t the only Democrat with a good night. Zohran Mamdani became the mayor-elect of New York City, and Abigail Spanberger won the Virginia gubernatorial race. In California, voters passed Proposition 50, redistricting the state’s congressional map in favor of Democrats.

In the Minneapolis Mayor election, incumbent Jacob Frey won in the final round of ranked choice voting over challenger Omar Fateh. The former chose to run on the Democrat Farmer-Laborer party line against the Democratic Socialist opponent, a move that sparked controversy after the DFL rescinded an earlier earned endorsement of Fateh, citing electronic issues in the voting system.

In the New Jersey General Assembly, the Democrats flipped several seats, strengthening their majority in the state legislature. Democrats increased their seats from 52 total to 57, with Republicans retaining 23 seats. Four seats remained uncalled in the assembly elections.

In the New Jersey Assembly, voters pick two candidates to vote for per district, meaning they can be represented by two candidates of one party, or one candidate from either party.

In NJ Assembly District 21, both Republican incumbents lost to Democrats, with Andrew Macurdy and Vincent Kearney winning over Michele Matsikoudis and Nancy Munoz. In District 30, Republican Sean Kean and Democrat Alexander Schnall, both incumbents, represent the only district with a split representation so far. Districts 3 and 25 seek to join them, should Democrat challengers win their races.

WRSU had earlier reported that four districts remained too close to call – Districts 2, 3, 25, and 39. However, since then, all four districts have been called.

In District 2, incumbent Republican Don Guardian won with Democrat Maureen Rowan flipping Republican Claire Swift’s seat, with Democrat Joanne Famularo falling short alongside Swift, who ended fourth.

In District 25, Republican incumbent Aura Dunn retained her seat, coming in second to Democrat challenger Marisa Sweeney who won. Republican incumbent Christian Barranco came in third, losing his seat, with Democrat challenger Steven Pylypchuk coming in fourth.

In District 3, Democratic incumbents Heather Simmons and Dave Bailey won over Republican challengers Chris Konawel and Lawrence Moore. In District 39, Republican incumbents Robert Auth and John Azzariti won over the Democrat pair of Andrew LaBruno and Donna Abene.
