Rutgers football (7-6) was defeated by Kansas State (9-4) on Thursday in the 2024 Rate Bowl, 44-41. WRSU’s Eddie Kalegi and Nick Hart broadcasted the game live from Phoenix, Arizona.
With star running back Kyle Monangai sidelined to prepare for the NFL draft, backup Antwan Raymond scored three touchdowns with 113 yards on the ground. Raymond’s third touchdown resulted from a well-executed fumblerooski trick play at the goal line. Listen to Kalegi’s call here:
Wide receiver Ian Strong added five catches for 105 yards. Listen to Hart’s call from Strong’s 60-yard reception in the second quarter:
But what started as perhaps the best offensive half of the season ended in another tough loss for the Scarlet Knights. The defense collapsed in the fourth quarter, allowing Kansas State to score back-to-back touchdowns to take the 44-41 lead with just under 5 minutes left. The Rutgers offense subsequently turned the ball over on downs, sealing the deal for the Wildcats.
The loss was another chapter in a season defined by significant injuries and difficulties closing out games.
