Rutgers transitions to eduroam, replaces RUWireless Secure

Rutgers University is preparing to transition its primary wireless network from RUWireless Secure to eduroam this fall.
Starting Sept. 29, all new devices connecting to Wi-Fi at Rutgers will be required to use the eduroam network.
Eduroam, which is short for “educational roaming,” is a global Wi-Fi service used by universities and research institutions worldwide. Rutgers users connected to eduroam can also access the network at participating institutions when traveling.
Existing devices can continue using RUWireless Secure during the transition, but users are encouraged to make the switch this fall.
The Office of Information Technology will provide instructions to help students and staff connect new and existing devices to eduroam.
Rutgers said the change is intended to “enhance security, simplify the wireless experience, and avoid disruptions related to underlying technical changes.”
RUWireless Secure will officially be shut down on Jan. 5, 2027.
