Rutgers University has announced that rumors circulating on social media that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were on Busch and College Avenue campuses on Wednesday are false.
The reports started online after a screenshot of a GroupMe message circulated on social media, in which a user claims their resident assistant told them ICE agents had been seen on Busch campus.
Organizations like the Society of Hispanic Engineers put out statements urging students to “stay inside if possible.”
A University spokesperson later told The Daily Targum that ICE was not present on Bush or College avenue. Organizations like UndocuRutgers and Semilla Roja – who are not affiliated with Rutgers University – later corroborated the University’s assertion.
The reports come after University President Johnathan Holloway and New Brunswick Chancellor Francine Conway confirmed that some international students had their visas revoked without explanation. While the letters do not specify the number of students who had revocations, the University told the Targum that around a dozen students had their visas removed.
